English is a highly structured system of communication in which the most complex and elusive meanings are encoded in sequences of sounds travelling through air, or of letters written on pages. Using the techniques of modern linguistics, you will analyse the structure of syllables, words, phrases, sentences and other linguistic units to see how they carry the message from the speaker to the listener, and from the writer to the reader.
You will also examine how the language relates to, expresses and reflects the culture of its speakers. English is not only the medium of Shakespeare's plays and of Wordsworth's poetry, of Dickens' novels and Disney's films. It functions equally well in the written and spoken expression of cooking recipes, adverts and High Court judgements.. You will use a variety of spoken and written text types as you develop your understanding of how English works. |
