Designed to enable and support students as they conduct original research, develop teaching and mentoring skills, and become engaged in the scientific community at large. Students learn the theoretical, technical, analytical, and communication skills needed to perform timely and groundbreaking research. Their original work makes significant contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms of biochemical processes and the complex interactions between organisms. Formal milestones for the programs include regular meetings with the faculty advisory committee, approval of a research proposal, formal oral presentation of the research, writing of a thesis, and a final defense of the work. Each Ph.D. student is also required to be a teaching assistant for at least two terms. |
