What are beauty, reason, imagination, and art? What are happiness, virtue, and freedom? How does one understand the relationship between an author and his or her own time? What do the traditions of literature teach an aspiring young writer about craft, vision, and excellence? As a Hillsdale English major, you'll embark on the quest for greater understanding by reading and discussing major authors, primarily in the American, British, and continental traditions. The study of literature will form your judgment and intuition, and transform your ability to communicate, especially in writing. Our commitment is unmatched when it comes to mentoring students and forming graduates who can reason, write and speak exceptionally well. As an English major, you will join an ambitious and principled community of scholars and friends dedicated to the College's mission: the high calling of liberal education in the pursuit of truth. English is offered as both a major and minor. |
