Description:

Expertise in modern languages has never been more important as the United Kingdom forges a new relationship with its European partners and seeks to develop its trading and cultural ties throughout the world. The University of Bristol offers an exciting and dynamic environment in which to pursue the study of modern languages and cultures. Our Joint Honours degree in Czech and Spanish enables you to study two contrasting languages and cultures in the context of their speakers' history, literature and experiences.

Spanish is the second most widely spoken European language in the world, while the modern Czech Republic is at the heart of the expanded European Union and is set to remain a key strategic and trading partner of the UK. You will take units in both languages in year one and choose from a range of options in years two and four, combining cultural, historical and sociological approaches in units ranging from South American politics to Czech literature and cinema. In language classes you will develop speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation skills, using a range of textbooks, media and internet resources. You will divide your third year between the Czech Republic and a Spanish-speaking country, either at a university or on a work placement.
