Our 10-month Business Management and Entrepreneurship Program will provide you with the essential skills you need to thrive in the business world. To run your own business or manage someone else’s, you need a solid foundation in Management, Human Resources, Business Law, Accounting and Marketing. Our Business Management program will give you all those skills as well as expertise in entrepreneurship and project management. Our teaching style goes beyond classroom lectures, with project work and interactive exercises that help you learn the skills you need better.

Following 9-months of classroom and practical experience and hands-on instruction, your program concludes with a 4-week practicum.

The Business Management and Entrepreneurship Diploma Program takes people just like you with the dream, the drive, and the desire to excel and gives them the skills they need to be successful in today’s marketplace. The modern business world has moved beyond spreadsheets and boring business plans – to launch a startup, build an empire or grow someone else’s company, you need a solid foundation of base skills…but even that’s not enough. You need to learn from experience – both your own and from those who have blazed this trail before you. At Oulton, school’s out: training is in. We source and recruit our instructors from the corporate world, so you learn from those who have had success in real life. We go beyond classroom lectures, giving you and every one of our students the opportunity to develop and use your skills, connect with the business community, and build your network – all before graduation day. So how do we turn students into business mavericks? Our Business Management & Entrepreneurship Diploma program provides hands-on practical experience and training in:

  • Learn the exciting (and functional) steps to entrepreneurship right up to writing a business plan and going through the steps of opening and operating your own business, including delivering pitches to real investors.

  • The most important component of a business is strategic execution; learning how to start, manage, and successfully execute large-scale projects – a course unique to Atlantic colleges.

This program involves 9 months of classroom work, developing and incubating your skills in each area of business. But you’re not done yet! With the successful completion of the classroom component, you will be given the opportunity to complete a four-week practicum. You’ll be able to test, apply, and build on what you have learned and also gain valuable experience (hello resume building!) so you can hit the ground running after graduation. Admissions Requirements

  • Grade 12 Diploma, Adult Diploma or GED
  • Meeting with an Admissions Advisor
  • Acceptance by the Admissions Committee
  • Completion of the Pre-Enrollment Package

*Level II or University Preparatory courses are required. Based on New Brunswick Anglophone High School Curriculum.

Unless they have completed a minimum of three years of study at a school where English is the language of instruction, international students whose first language is not English must submit proof of English language proficiency:  

    • IELTS – 6.0, with no individual score lower than 5.5   
    • TOEFL (IBT) – 80, with no individual score lower than 18   
    • Duolinguo – minimum score of 90 with no subject test score less than 90   
    • Cambridge English – minimum score of 169   
    • CAEL – minimum score of 60   
    • Pearson Test of English – minimum score of 55   
    • MELAB – minimum score of 80   

Business Basics

The course is designed to introduce students to different aspects of a general business environment. Various topics such as global markets, economic challenges, competitive forces, forms of business ownership, and financial management will be covered. This information will provide students with a general understanding of how Canadian businesses operate.

Business Math

Students will learn how to perform business math equations both manually and for use with computer software, including: working with fractions, per cents, decimals and ratios, calculating payroll net of all deductions, as well as calculating simple and compound interest.

Business Communications

This course will prepare you for different types of verbal and written communication in the workplace. It will teach you numerous styles of letters and when they are to be used, as well as tactics for editing and proofreading a document. Lastly you will be taught proper formatting for various types of documents.

Business Law

The course is an introduction to Canada’s legal system and the legal principles that govern business relations in Canada, with specific reference to the laws of New Brunswick. The course examines the basic legal principles pertaining to contracts, torts, employment, real and personal property, business ownership, and consumer protection. Actual case decisions are used to help develop the skills required for legal analysis and an appreciation of judicial reasoning.

Entrepreneurship

This course focuses on practical approaches to identifying business opportunities, developing a plan that assesses the viability of the new business, developing a financial analysis that is in the form expected by lenders (banks, specialty groups, angels, and partners), determine key performance indicators that are milestone-based, and to develop an effective network of advisors. Students will pitch their business idea to real investors.

Introduction to Marketing

This course provides students with their first exposure to the key concepts and theories of marketing. The course also teaches advertising and promotions, focusing on how to reach the right target markets with the right message. Key concepts include integrated marketing/communications, defining target audiences, costs of different types of media, and the roles within a communications agency. Through a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, guest speakers and role play; along with learning exercises such as case analyses, presentations (group and solo), a test, and a major marketing project, students will gain the knowledge to work at junior levels in the marketing and communications field.

Introduction to Digital Marketing

The digital marketing landscape continues to evolve quickly. By integrating up-to-date information specializing in the social marketing environment along with a review of the importance of front-line staff feedback, the student will develop a clear understanding of the many “touch points” where consumers or customers engage with a company. We will study a general overview of each aspect of Digital Marketing and sharing techniques/strategies you can implement effectively for business growth and development. Through a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, guest speakers and role play; along with learning exercises such as case analyses, presentations (group and solo), a test, and the completion of a custom website for a product or service launch, students will gain the knowledge needed to work at junior levels in the marketing and communications field.

Introduction to Professional Sales

The role of sales has changed dramatically over the last decade, with the new image of a salesperson being that of someone who is highly professional and looking to provide the customer with products or services that match their needs. The success of a sale’s professional hinges on his her/his ability to understand the exact needs and wants of the customer and to align these with her/his product offering. A variety of sales tools will be identified. Much of the focus of the course will be on taking care of the customer through exceptional customer service.

Computer Applications I

This course introduces the concepts and principles underlying personal productivity tools that are widely used in business such as word processing. Students learn basic computer terminology and concepts. Hands- on exercises provide students with experience in the use of personal computers and productivity tools. The student will use Microsoft Word to create documents, format the document, work with graphics in a document, and properly proof the document. This course covers Microsoft Excel at the introduction stage- how to work with information, change information, create basic math formulas, and create charts. The student will also be introduced to basic concepts of creating a presentation in PowerPoint using the same techniques. The first semester will cover Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Applied Management

This course will prepare you for various types of applied skills to be used in the workplace. It will teach you how to effectively manage a team of employees by means of coaching design and feedback systems, as well you will learn numerous styles of performance management. You will facilitate interviews with potential employees, staff meetings, and assess strengths and weaknesses of a company and its employees. Lastly you will deliver a one-hour business seminar to be done in a professional business style, based on research of a given topic.

Business Accounting

This course will focus on completing the accounting cycle for sole proprietorships in the service and sales industries. It will cover the cycle from analyzing to recording to preparation of financial statements.

The differences between providing a service and providing a product will be explored and practiced. A look at special journals and cash controls will round out this introductory course. Students will learn the terminology and ethics of the accounting field.

Human Resources

This course focuses on practical approaches to undertaking all tasks within the HRM (human resources management) role. The course utilizes a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, guest speakers and role play, along with learning exercises such as case analyses. Students will gain the knowledge needed to work at various levels within human resources including administration, recruiting, training and compensation. If the student pursues an entrepreneurial route, s/he will understand how to plan for workload; identify job responsibilities; pursue and recruit candidates and understand the administrative tasks for successful human resources management.

Project Management

Managers sometimes need to organize and manage projects: activities which have a defined beginning and end. Building a skyscraper, planning the Olympic Games or running an election campaign: these are all examples of projects. This course will teach students how to manage projects, from human resources to budgeting, from risk management to scheduling. At the completion of this course, students will have the required number of hours to qualify to write the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) exam, which is an internationally recognized designation in this field.

Oulton College is proud to partner with Crandall University to provide students with a base education (a college education that can be credited towards the completion of a degree!) Your diploma from Oulton College will allow you to transfer 24 credit hours toward the Adult Degree Completion Program– Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Management.
