Environmental Studies (PhD)

The PhD is a research program focused on the creation of a dissertation. This original work will show your research and fundamental mastery of environmental studies.

You’ll work closely with international communities, First Nations, government agencies and more. You’ll start the program with a three-day field camp.

You have the option of combining this program with the interdisciplinary Cultural, Social and Political Thought PhD.

Find a supervisor

PhD students must have a faculty member who serves as their academic supervisor. When you apply:

  • you must list a potential supervisor on your application
  • this faculty member must agree to be your supervisor and recommend your admission
  • include an email from your supervisor with your application

To find a supervisor, review the faculty contacts. When you’ve found a faculty member whose research complements your own, contact them by email.

Equivalent of a minimum A- (7.0) average over the last two years of your master's degree.

As part of your application, you must submit:

  • a 1-2 page statement of research intent, which also identifies the faculty member(s) you’d like to work with
  • a 1-2 page essay highlighting your past accomplishments, evidence of creativity and research potential
  • a current résumé
  • two reference names and their email addresses
  • post-secondary transcripts
