Overview
Alpha College of Business and Technology connects international students seeking a quality post-secondary education with one of the leading colleges in Ontario. The Alpha College of Business and Technology is affiliated with St. Lawrence College, who provides oversight over all curriculum, faculty, and operational quality for college-level programs delivered at Alpha’s Toronto campus. Students can learn how apply through Alpha at: https://alphacollege.ca/how-to-pay-my-fees/ and are considered enrolled at St. Lawrence College once admitted. Graduates receive a St. Lawrence College diploma or graduate certificate, depending on their course of study.
The purpose of the ESL program is to provide international students who speak English as a second language with instruction and support that will enable them to improve their English language skills and prepare for further academic studies.
Students will develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, and will have the ability to successfully participate and function in an English-speaking academic environment in Canada.
Students will also have the opportunity to learn about Canadian culture and the local area through meaningful experiences in the community. Students receive a total of 24 hours of instruction a week.
There are three levels – Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, and Advanced. At the Advanced level, students have the opportunity to take credit courses of their choice in consultation with an academic advisor. When students successfully complete the Advanced level with a minimum average of 60%, they receive a Statement of Achievement. With this Statement of Achievement, they meet the English language requirements for most college programs at St. Lawrence College, with no further English testing required.
The program uses Canadian materials particularly aimed at improving the English language skills of students who intend to enroll in a college diploma program. Students are offered an enriching English experience with authentic readings, audio and video segments, activities and exercises designed to build vocabulary, text comprehension and pronunciation.
The curriculum is structured according to theme or topic-based teaching that relates to real-life topics and issues of current interest. Business English and test preparation are also included.
Final marks will be based upon completion of assignments, periodic testing, class participation, and an exit exam.
