Students will be trained to provide direct client care in home support agencies, nursing homes, and homes for the aged. Individuals will learn to provide care to meet the various needs of elderly, disabled, and convalescents. This program consists of approximately 20 weeks of in-class instruction and 10 weeks of practicum placements. Clinical Placements and Work Experience practicum in both long-term care and home-support agencies must be successfully completed in order to graduate. An interview may be required before accepting students for clinical experience. Students are required to provide their own transportation to clinical placements and work experience practicums. Shift work is an integral part of this occupation. Furthermore, physical demands include moving, lifting, and continued standing. Included in a student’s book fees is a charge of $150. This fee is for individuals who successfully complete all components of the program who will be eligible to write the provincial exam. |
These courses are intended as guidelines. Speak to your guidance counsellor to see what courses are offered at your school. Application, resume, and transcript of Grade 12 marks (or GED) must be received prior to the interview. Individuals interested in applying under the Mature Student policy must be a minimum of 21 years of age, be out of school for a minimum of 1 year and must provide high school transcripts demonstrating that a minimum of Grade 10 was completed. An interview and aptitude test must be completed before any acceptance into the program can be considered. It is a requirement for all students enrolled in this program to provide a clean Canadian Wide Criminal Record Check conducted within the last 6 months and have a valid drivers license. |
