Description:

For non-native speakers of English.

Reading skills are critical in helping non-native speakers achieve their academic potential. The huge amount of reading required by university and college study demands that students know how to read a variety of texts, some for the general idea, others for deep understanding or synthesis in essays, exam answers, annotated bibliographies, or reports. Finally, students are expected to be critical readers able to rapidly deconstruct and evaluate texts.

This course offers a variety of strategies to help: recognizing patterns in text organization, sentence structure, and vocabulary that help you identify main ideas and support, expanding your practical use of formal vocabulary, increasing your reading speed, using graphic organizers to interact with texts and enhance understanding, and teaching methods of critiquing readings. Activities are based on formal and academic materials from a variety of disciplines. Expect up to three hours of homework each week.
