Description:

Studying Biomedical Science provides you with the scientific knowledge underpinning an understanding of the biology of disease, and its application to diagnose disease and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments. You will develop skills that are at the forefront of advances in medical science and build the analytical, problem-solving and communication abilities needed for rewarding careers in areas such as medical research, consultancy, education and management.

Accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), BSc(Hons) Biomedical Science at UWE Bristol offers a hands-on approach to learning. Based around a strong foundation in modern biomedicine including basic scientific core subjects together with a study of the biomedical science specialist subjects, integrated through a study of the biology of disease, you will gain wide-ranging experience as well as having the flexibility to develop expertise in the areas that interest you most. Working at the cutting-edge of biomedical science and using state-of-the-art equipment, our focus on the application of science in the real-world will prepare you for a variety of exciting careers.

Throughout the course, you will be able to apply your expertise and build professional skills in work-based settings with placements, internships and volunteering roles. The sandwich course option involves 40 weeks of work-based training in a specialised area of biomedical science. Students have the chance to work with major employers in the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry such as GlaxoSmithKline, ICI and Novartis, government laboratories including CAMR and Porton Down, and various university research centres. Some students choose to spend their year overseas in destinations such as the USA, Malaysia, Germany or Switzerland.
