Island Career Academy, a Nova Scotia Department of Education Private College Division registered Private College, is the trade name of Johnston and Johnston Consultants Limited. The Academy’s new, modern spacious campus is located at 721 Alexandra Street in Sydney. The campus is a 10,000 square foot complex.
Johnston and Johnston Consultants Limited (Island Career Academy) is a duly incorporated company whose sole purpose is that of occupational training, providing full time training programs to help students find and maintain meaningful employment opportunities here at home on Cape Breton Island since 1987.
A unique aspect of Island Career Academy is the fact that every student who completes course requirements receives an on-the-job training placement of between six and sixteen weeks; depending on the program of enrollment. Although Island Career Academy specializes in full time training, our extension department offers a variety of part time training courses including computer courses and business courses such as bookkeeping/accounting, word processing, Canadian Red Cross CPR/First Aid training, WHMIS, Non Violent Crises Intervention, and Alzheimer and Dementia Care.
The Student Work Placement Program is implemented under the guidance of our Employment Development Coordinator and is a vital component of our graduates' success. Each and every one of Island Career Academy's full time diploma programs include a work-term with varying periods of time. This ensures that graduates receive valuable experience in a work environment relevant to their course of study. All students who successfully complete the instruction/theory portion of their program receive a work term placement.
Island Career Academy provides students and faculty of all programs with access to a research lab. The research lab includes a library of books on course subjects within our training programs. Additionally, the research lab provides full internet access using a high-speed cable connection. The computer labs, which are traditional in respect to their contents, consist of seating for twenty students per lab. Each workstation consists of an independent PC system, which is networked using Windows and connected to the Internet with a high speed cable connection.
If a student has difficulty with their courses, our complementary tutoring program is available. It is designed to help a student identify and overcome problem areas in courses and is available to all students. The child care center, (ICA Child Care Center), is licenced by the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services. The centre accommodates fifteen (15) children between the ages of eighteen (18) months and five (5) years of age.
The Graduate Assistance Program, (GAP), has been developed to ensure that graduate students have access to ongoing support from Island Career Academy. Services currently available to students through the GAP include: lifetime employment assistant placement, resume updates, cover letter writing and other employment assistance related items. Graduates may contact our counsellors for assistance in these areas. Graduates enjoy free admission to seminars regarding employment: i.e. job search skills, resume preparation, etc., free technology access: graduates are granted access to computers for the purpose of employment assistance related items, such as internet access for world wide web employment searches. Graduates are also offered tuition-free upgrading in any course previously taken.
