St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies, is an international centre of education and provides an unrivalled global education experience. Founded in 1977, the University has graduated over 12,000 internationally trained medical doctors, veterinary medical doctors, scientists, and business professionals in all corners of the globe, including all 50 US states, Puerto Rico, and the 10 provinces of Canada. The University draws students and faculty from over 140 countries, with almost 700 Canadian students presently enrolled.
The St. George’s University Schools of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Arts and Sciences, and Graduate Studies Program are dispersed over 42 acres in southwest Grenada. With the latest construction, its True Blue campus offers a $250 million technologically advanced campus that provides its students with superior facilities, including a state-of-the-art library, anatomy labs, dormitories, lecture halls, and a research institute.
St. George’s University’s School of Medicine has been assessed intensely over its history, and its excellence is substantiated by numerous studies, accreditations, and approvals from institutions and governing bodies worldwide. The University is recognized as the leader among Caribbean countries in the USMLE Step One and Step Two/CK first-time pass rates in a 15-year study published in Academic Medicine.
Most medical students complete their two years of basic sciences on St. George’s University True Blue campus. Through the Keith B. Taylor Global Scholars Program, some medical students begin their education at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom before undertaking their second year of study in Grenada. Both medical and veterinary medical students complete clinical training in affiliated institutions and approved clinical centres in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Ireland.
Initially founded as a School of Medicine, St. George’s University has added programs in veterinary medicine, nursing, public health, business, liberal studies, and a wide variety of research master’s degrees. Through its Graduate Studies Program, students may choose to pursue combined degrees, such as the Doctor of Medicine/Master of Science or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine/Master of Public Health degrees or an MBA in Multi-Sector Health Management.

Virtually all students take advantage of the academic and personal assistance the University makes available and the University has more staff devoted to support services than some institutions have faculty.
Faculty - One of the most impressive features of St. George’s University is the student-to-faculty ratio that results in unparalleled access to and personal attention from our outstanding international faculty of 2,300 plus, 400 of whom are campus-based. Many have taught at St. George’s University for decades, some from its inception 35 years ago. Also, the Visiting Scholars program gives students exposure to a variety of experts in their fields within carefully structured curricula. This ongoing program gives students the luxury of a continuous stream of international experts who become a lifelong network of colleagues within a controlled academic program. There are more than 120 visiting scholars in the School of Medicine each year and more than 40 in the School of Veterinary Medicine. Professors and visiting scholars from highly noted institutions such as Harvard and The Rockefeller Institute have graced the campuses and lecture halls, while Nobel Prize winners sit on the University’s academic board.
In its School of Medicine, St. George’s offers the Doctor of Medicine (MD); Master of Public Health (MPH); Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.); Master of Science (MSc); and dual degrees: BS/MD; MD/MPH; and MD/MSc. In the School of Veterinary Medicine, St. George’s students may attain the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM); Master of Science (MSc); and dual degrees: BS/DVM; DVM/MPH; and DVM/MSc. In the School of Arts and Sciences, students may pursue undergraduate degrees: Bachelor of Science in Medical Sciences; Bachelor of Science in Life Sciences; Bachelor of Science in International Business; Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies; Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems (BA) and (BS), and graduate degrees: Master in Business Administration (MBA) and Master in International Business (MIB). Working closely with the nearby Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation, St. George’s University also provides independent programs leading to Master’s level or Doctoral degrees in public health and allied health sciences.
The University has recently completed beautifully designed living space for students at its True Blue Campus. All of the residence halls have central air conditioning. All bedrooms are furnished with beds, chairs, desks, closet space, and bookshelves. There are laundry facilities in each building. All entering undergraduate, pre-medical, and pre-veterinary students are required to live on campus for one year and all entering medical, veterinary, and graduate students are required to live on campus for one term. The campus houses over 2,000 students.
Many students live off-campus in a variety of housing configurations, from shared homes to apartments. Free bus transportation is available from 6 am to 2 am to accommodate those students living off campus in various areas of the island.
The stunning True Blue campus is the heart of the University. This $250+ million state-of-the-art University community is located on the southwestern corner of Grenada, on a peninsula overlooking the Caribbean Sea. The wireless-enhanced campus has recently seen the construction of more than 65 new buildings, including a library, anatomy labs, dormitories, lecture halls, and a research institute. In addition, all students have access to the 17,000-square-foot Student Center, which houses a cafeteria, food court, offices for student organizations, a fitness center, lockers, showers, and many more amenities. The University campus is the perfect environment in which to learn, investigate, play, and make lifelong networks of colleagues and friends from around the world. A rich, culturally diverse environment is enhanced by student- and University-led activities.
The Office of Career Guidance and Student Development (OCGSD) supports medical students in the steps necessary to obtain postgraduate residencies and licensure procedures. The OCGSD advises students on USMLE preparation, and counsels students in specialty and residency selection, interview skills, CV preparation, and the residency application process in the United States, the United Kingdom, and non-US programs. Staffed by faculty and St. George’s School of Medicine alumni, the OCGSD provides complete information on examination requirements, clinical rotation time schedules, and postgraduate training to guide students through the residency application process.
In addition to team sports such as basketball, soccer, field hockey, and running, common to universities in North America, St. George's location on a tropical island in the Caribbean Sea offers students an additional scope of sports activities. These include snorkeling, swimming, scuba diving, parasailing, boating and hiking the rain forest.
Over 50 student organizations draw students to different areas of university life: cultural, religious, social, academic, professional, and community service.
Canadian students, who are thousands of miles from home, are exposed to new cultures and activities but also indulge in pastimes common to their upbringing. Students enjoy passionate games of street hockey in a tropical environment, trading ice skates for roller blades in their off-hours. The Canadian Students Association is one of the most active student groups on campus and works to facilitate the transition of students to life at St. George’s, while enriching the entire community by sharing their rich Canadian culture and heritage.
The technology infrastructure at the University matches the excellence of the physical campus and provides all the benefits of digital and information advances to aid students in their education. The University uses technology to extend its instructional activities throughout all of its global locations, while applying technology to improve the quality of instruction and services delivered to students both on and off campus. Technology initiatives include web-based tools enabling students to view schedules, registrar information, academic history, schedule, and financial information from any computer with Internet access. Sophisticated information systems, including campus information technology labs, are deployed throughout the University to enhance instructional support, provide classroom technology, connect student housing, and support e-learning.
St. George's University is home to a number of religious and cultural organizations that support the spiritual and cultural growth of the members of the University community.
Student support services are deeply ingrained into the culture of the St. George’s University community. In fact, St. George’s has more faculty members and staff devoted to student support services than some regional schools have on their entire faculty. The University’s dedicated Department of Educational Services teaches students how to learn and teachers how to teach. This unusual and highly effective faculty is the largest on campus, and is an important component of our students’ and graduates’ successes. Close to 98% of the University’s students and many of the professors in all schools avail themselves of the support offered through a variety of innovative programs, including time management, note-taking skills, and utilizing technology effectively in teaching and learning.

With its affiliate, the Windward Islands Research and Education Foundation (WINDREF), St. George’s University continues to advance public health and environmentally sustainable development through multidisciplinary research. WINDREF, an independent nonprofit organization located on St. George’s True Blue campus, partners with prestigious North American, Caribbean, European, and African institutions. It draws internationally recognized scholars and regional scientists to participate in global research affecting the Caribbean region, including in the areas of medical and veterinary public health, marine and terrestrial biology and ecology.
