Profile

St. John's-Kilmarnock School is dedicated to excellence offering advanced academic courses leading toward university acceptance. Students are provided with a balanced education focused on the development of the whole person; academic, athletic, social, creative, and spiritual. Situated on a picturesque rural campus, complete with nature trails and a large pond used for kayaking and canoeing, St. John's-Kilmarnock School (SJK) is located in the heart of "Canada's Technology Triangle" and maintains close links with three local universities and the business community. The campus is a 45 minute drive west of Toronto and Pearson International Airport. SJK's rural setting, proximity to an equestrian centre and on-campus sports fields, allow for a varied and full varsity program. Our off-campus marine biology and freshwater ecology courses are unique and the information technology facilities are superior. We seek to instil in our students a feeling of self worth combined with a responsibility towards each other so that they may grow to become leading citizens of tomorrow. Working together, teachers and students share their talents in their common quest of excellence. The International Program at SJK is highly regarded with a full-time Director of International Programs, Kim Wakeford who works with you and your child through the entire admissions process from start to finish. At SJK, our usual number of 20 to 30 international students represents approximately 15% of our upper school population. Many of our international students prefer this small number of international students as it helps them to focus on learning English. As their advisor, Ms. Wakeford also provides each of the international students with personalized service. Her office is located in the front entrance of the school and she is available to international students each day. International students receive personalized English as a Second Language (ESL) program and English language instruction. Carefully chosen Canadian English speaking families take international students in their homes for the duration of their studies. These families provide students with a valuable Canadian cultural experience.

Information Technology

All students at SJK (K-OAC) have weekly scheduled computer classes, which incorporate problem solving using real life situations. Each computer is networked with Internet access and Microsoft Office suite. We have two fully equipped computer labs housing the latest technology, one of which is brand new this year and serviced by Pentium III computers. Throughout the school, we have a ratio of one computer for every three students. It is possible for each student to have his or her own e-mail address. The network is school wide with a special software development course at the OAC level.

Cultural

Students take advantage of the excellent facilities in our brand new art studio. Our new Chapel building houses the music and drama programs. SJK has a band and four school choirs. Every year, each one of our schools accomplishes one major drama performance. This year lower and middle school performed "Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat" and the upper school performed "Hard Candy". SJK also has a fully equipped library, Resource Centre with a full-time librarian, and the latest online resources. Having affiliations with the three neighbouring major Canadian universities (University of Guelph, University of Waterloo, and Wilfrid Laurier University) allows us access to their professional facilities.

Special Services

All facilities are wheelchair accessible.

Affiliated Institutions

Nestled in the heart of Canada's high technology triangle, we have strong affiliations with three major Canadian universities, Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier, and Guelph. We offer learning opportunities beyond the classroom ranging from equestrian skills at the International Equestrian Centre in close proximity to the school, water ecology course in Dorset, Ontario, and marine science at Huntsman Marine Science Centre, St. Andrew's, New Brunswick. SJK is inspected by the Ontario Ministry of Education and grants the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. SJK is a member of the Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI), a not for profit organization, which provides accreditation only to the top independent schools in Canada with very demanding standards ranging from governance and finance to academic and extracurricular programs. St. John's-Kilmarnock School is a member of C.A.I.S. (Canadian Association of Independent Schools) and is one of only 73 schools in Canada.
