Profile

Vedanta Academy is a Project Learning, values based, affordable, academic Kindergarten to Grade 12 School, which in addition to concentration on active Project Based Learning, Reading and Study skills, focuses on the entire child including learning to be good to themselves and to the people and world around them. We work with children of average or above average intelligence with learning differences that might find it difficult to find success in traditional education formats. Character development is an integral component here at Vedanta. We have developed a values program with an acronym that students can easily understand and achieve based on the 6 pillars of character. The S.T.R.I.V.E program, which is integrated throughout our school and curriculum, has garnered great success in fostering and building self-esteem within our students. Our faculty continually model the STRIVE standards and then ask students daily “How well did you S.T.R.I.V.E today?” Vedanta Academy started in 1999 by a small group of parents whose children were struggling within the traditional school format. They saw the need for an individualized education system within the community. A school where children of average to above average intelligence, with learning differences, could achieve success and a love of learning. We know that children learn differently and while some learn very well in conventional lecture, homework and repetition learning systems, others do not. Yet they are every bit as intelligent. There are a number of labels applied to various systems and learners but at the end of the day it all boils down to what learning environment is the right fit. It is important for YOU to find your fit. We are one of a number of Independent learning environments in the Central Okanagan and all of us have our “student fits”. At Vedanta Academy we provide an active learning environment focusing on Active reading skills, Active study skills, Active note taking and Active learning strategies. We also teach and reinforce organizational skills. Students acquire the needed tools essential to their learning style, which grows their academic achievement. Student growth in learning improves self-esteem as they gain their rightful place as effective learners and leaders. We celebrate differences at Vedanta Academy which includes learning differences, cultural differences and social differences. We operate in a non-denominational format incorporating core human principles as outlined in the STRIVE Program. Discipline is a restorative justice model where students discuss and settle their conflicts in a rational and mediated atmosphere, working toward a goal of making things right. We are a school of first choice, where students want to attend and do so with pride and enthusiasm. We foster an environment where students are free to exchange ideas and thoughts. Critical thinking skills are nurtured and students are encouraged to make choices understanding the results of their choices, both good and bad. Students are taught how to think not what to think.
