Formerly Keewatin Community College, University College of the North (UCN) is Manitoba’s newest post-secondary institution and is focused on community and northern development, reflecting the Aboriginal reality and cultural diversity of northern Manitoba. The University College offers an integrated university and college approach to post-secondary education.

Community Based Education of the University College of the North has created a presence in many northern communities, which has allowed UCN to develop a portfolio of programs and courses specifically designed to meet the needs of the North. Community Based Education is continuously expanding and updating these programs and courses. Accredited post-secondary courses can be delivered. Customized courses can be developed to meet the client’s needs. Quality training and service is guaranteed.

Both The Pas and Thompson campuses have residence spaces for students. Both are co-ed and have rooms reserved for physically challenged students.

The Pas Campus is the main campus for University College of the North. It is located at 436 7th Street East and offers in-class instruction with various student supports in place. The Pas Campus is located in the thriving town of The Pas, Manitoba, a community of approximately 6000 people located north of the 53rd parallel and 625 kilometers (375 miles) north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. There is an additional population base of 15,000 people who reside in the service area of The Pas - RM of Kelsey, Cormorant, Moose Lake, Clearwater Lake, Rocky Lake, and the Opaskwayak Cree Nation. One in ten people in The Pas are employed in the forestry industry with Tolko Industries Ltd. Tolko specializes in the production of dressed lumber for construction as well as the manufacturing of Kraft paper. In total, Tolko is responsible for more than $100 million in gross sales across North America and overseas, making it a major contributor to Manitoba's economic wealth.

At the Educational Service Centre, students can receive help in attaining their career goals. The University College of the North offers diploma and certificate level programs and courses covering a wide area of interests. Many of our programs have full accreditation and are unique to Manitoba. UCN is also in the midst of a Distance Education initiative, which will bring our programs and courses into an estimated 24 northern communities.

The school has a fully equipped gym and offers many intramural sports. Also present at the school is a small (but adequate) free weight and global gym facility.

Besides the ample athletic activities at the school, social events, such as barbecues, fun spiels, and craft nights are held. An annual "Deck The Halls" shopping spree and tea is also held each December.

The Circle Meeting is the traditional way of the Aboriginal people to come together in a respectful manner for the purpose of teaching, listening, learning, and sharing. This could be some degree of healing to the mind, the heart, the today, or the spirit. We encourage participants to speak not only from the mind, but also from the heart.

Computer accounts are created for students as part of the registration process. The computer labs are available for student use during the day and in the evening when there are no classes scheduled in the labs. Room schedules should be posted at the entrance to each lab, so please check before entering. In the evenings and weekends you may be required to present your student card to security personnel.

In 1995 University College of the North announced the renewal and revitalization of the Aboriginal Centres at both the Thompson and The Pas campuses. These two Aboriginal Centres promotes a student-centered and a student-focused mandate. It is a place for Aboriginal students to bring their friends, practice cultural beliefs, and to promote cross-cultural awareness. All students attending the College are encouraged to participate in the Centre activities at both campuses. Staff are also encouraged to participate and contribute to the student activities. In this way, all students and staff can honour and share their cultures with each other.

UCN's counseling office offers various support services to help you deal with college, family, and finances and to make your transition to a learning environment enjoyable, beneficial and pleasant. Services Available: Financial Assistance, Personal Counseling, Daycare, Other Counseling Services (orientation, transfers, etc.)

Daycare is available. You may be eligible for subsidy. Government subsidy is available according to net family income. Check with the counselors for more information and subsidy applications. A recent listing of the day care facilities in The Pas is available from the counselors and the residence counselors. These include day care centres, day care homes, group day care homes, and nursery schools.
