Sport Sheffield is the University department that manages all aspects of sport, health and fitness at the University of Sheffield.
Goodwin Sports Centre is our flagship facility incorporating three full size floodlit synthetic turf pitches, three small sided floodlit synthetic turf pitches, a multi-purpose sports hall, swimming pool, bouldering wall, four squash courts, a floodlit tennis court, cricket nets and a large state of the art fitness centre, S10health.
With 47 sports clubs and 280+ societies and working committees, the Union of Students offers a wealth of opportunities for you to take advantage of outside your academic studies.
All the clubs, societies and working committees are run by students for students.
Sports add the extra dimension to a healthy lifestyle, so whether it is the competitive action of a club sport from American Football to Netball or Athletics to Ultimate Frisbee, there will be a great range of sports to choose from. Or if you would like to be less committed, you could try the new gym (S10 Health) in the £6 million redeveloped Goodwin sports complex (further information available from sportsofficer@sheffield.ac.uk and www.sport-sheffield.com/)
All students are also welcome at every society and working committee event, which range from circus skills to poetry, film making to orchestras and many religious, departmental and national societies. (For details, e-mail activities.officer@sheffield.ac.uk).
If you don´t want to commit to anything, or fancy a change of scene, then Give-it-a-Go could be the answer. It´s a programme of one-off sports, activities, trips, skills and volunteering opportunities that you can dip in and out of as you want. It can be a challenge to find your way in a different culture - or even your own!
Culture Compass is the place to come to talk about culture whether you're from Birmingham or Bangalore, Nottingham or Nanjing - or anywhere in between! For international students it's a chance to make the transition to life in Sheffield and the UK a smoother one. For UK students it's an exciting opportunity to explore some of the hidden rules of your own culture and possibly prepare for future travels - and to help some new arrivals along the way.
Each session will focus on particular topics for group discussion and will include a help sheet with practical tips to take away with you. For undergraduate students, participation in Culture Compass can count towards your HEAR.
Postgraduate students who attend at least ten sessions over the course of the academic year qualify for a Global Campus certificate.
Sheffield Student Information Desk provides all the support students may require: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid including Disability and Dyslexia Support Service: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/ssid/disability
We have a thriving community of over 7000 international students from 143 countries - over 25% of our total student population. We value international students and are passionate about making sure their contribution to our economy and culture is recognised.
That's why the University and Students' Union, led by our Vice-Chancellor and the Students' Union President, launched our #weareinternational campaign in 2013. So far, over 100 universities, education institutions and international organisations have backed it.
