Plattsburgh is a coeducational, public college within the State University of New York (SUNY). Academically, SUNY Plattsburgh is characterized by a curriculum that spans arts and science, professional studies, and business programs. The most popular majors for international students are business, biochemistry (pre-med), computer science, and hotel, restaurant, and tourism management. Close interaction with faculty members who teach, advise, and mentor, help the students reach their full potential. The campus is considered safe and residential with twelve dormitories located on an easy-to-walk campus. Intercollegiate athletics are offered at the NCAA Division III level with 9 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams. The campus is located in a small city with shopping malls, multiplex movie theaters, restaurants, and hotels all located nearby. Montreal, Lake Placid, and Burlington, Vermont are located within an hour’s drive of the campus and offer many recreational opportunities.

Areas of Expertise

Plattsburgh State offers nearly 60 undergraduate degree programs (B.A., B.S., B.F.A., and B.S.Ed.) in arts and science, business, and professional studies. Accounting, art, biology (including premedical), communication, criminal justice, education, environmental science, hotel-restaurant-tourism management, journalism, nursing, and psychology are popular majors. Approximately 40 minor programs complement the curriculum, these include athletic coaching, gerontology, graphic design, health-care management, recreation, and more.

Furnished double rooms with free cable, free on-campus phone, and free high speed Internet. Life on campus is fun, exciting, and challenging! There is a strong sense of community on campus and students play a central role in creating an environment that values understanding and respect. Students consistently give the residence hall staff, safety and security, and their experiences in the residence halls an excellent rating in our annual Quality of Life Survey.

Incoming Students

First year students are encouraged to enrol in one of our innovative learning communities. Learning communities consist of 22 to 24 students who enrol together in specially designed general education courses taught by dedicated and innovative faculty from many disciplines.

Career Planning

The Career Development Centre provides a variety of services for current students and alumni of Plattsburgh State including individual career counselling with trained counsellors, on and off campus student employment listings, internship, graduate school, and job search assistance, workshops, mock interviews, and more.

Sports

Plattsburgh State sponsors 18 intercollegiate teams that compete against other SUNY colleges and teams at the Division III Level.

Clubs

The Student Association has over 80 clubs and organizations that are entirely student funded and student run.

Information Technology

The main lab has over 90 computers and there is also an extended lab with over 20 computers available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There are 20 smart classrooms, smart carts, and other instructional facilities. All dormitory rooms are equipped with data ports that provide access to campus computer (VAX) and free Internet.

Cultural

More than 30 annual performances feature student ensembles, guest artists, and student/faculty recitals. Plattsburgh State is home to a thriving theatre community. Students are encouraged and given an opportunity to get involved in on-campus music programs and different aspects of theatre.

Special Services

Student Support Services is an academic support program for students with disabling conditions such as a learning disability or a physical disability. Student Support Services (SSS) is staffed by caring and committed professionals whose mission is to provide you with services, free of charge, designed to help you succeed in college.

International Involvement

A study abroad experience supports and broadens the academic programs offered at your home campus. Experience an exciting year, semester, summer or winter abroad through one of SUNY Plattsburgh's study abroad or exchange programs. Plattsburgh students may also participate in the National Student Exchange or one of over 350 study abroad programs administered by another SUNY campus. Short-term summer, winter, and spring programs are available as well.
