Founded in 1836, Bishop's College School (BCS) prides itself on more than 168 years of high quality education geared towards university placement while offering a safe and caring family environment.
Nestled in the heart of French Quebec, BCS is comprised of 30 buildings spread over its 350-acre campus. The School is located approximately 1.5 hours east of Montreal in the scenic eastern townships. BCS offers its students the unique opportunity to live in, experience, and learn about Quebec culture and heritage while in an English environment.
BCS is an independent, co-educational boarding school that offers students from grades 7 to 12 an all-around education. Academically, the School has an 8:1 student-teacher ratio, which ensures individual attention and the recognition of different learning styles. Academic progress is closely monitored and evaluated every two weeks in a Continuous Effort Assessment. Report cards are issued four times a year. Each student's marks are carefully assessed in order to make sure they are fulfilling their true academic potential.
The School focuses on more than academics. Through the BCS experience, the school seeks to develop qualities in its students such as leadership, independence, assertiveness, and an outgoing spirit that will carry them to the forefront of the university and career world.
Bishop's College School is truly an international school as its students come from all over the world from all races and national origins. Students from over 27 countries live in close proximity with one another. Daily interaction on the sports fields, in the residences, and during class time promotes their cultural understanding and learning.
There are 8 residences on campus run by live-in house parents. Two students share each room.
The philosophy of learning through playing characterizes the physical education programme at BCS. We offer our students a wide range of sports to participate in such as soccer, hockey, football, squash, swimming, rugby, track, softball, golf, tennis, riding, cycling, aerobics, climbing, and skiing.
Bishop's College School's mandatory sports programme is complemented by its excellent facilities. The School's modern gymnasium has one of the most challenging climbing walls in the country. The Campus boasts seven playing fields, three tennis courts, two squash courts, and Canada's oldest covered indoor ice arena. The weight room has a full range of cardiovascular, nautilus, and free-weight machines.
BCS has a strong, diverse, and co-curricular programme. BCS' Cadet Corps #2, started in 1861, is the oldest in Canada. This compulsory activity is fundamental to the School's character building programme. Artistically inclined students may take part in one of our 4 bands, choir, or drama club, which all perform on a regular basis. They may also write for our nationally acclaimed literary magazine "Inscape". Those wishing to improve their skills with the public can partake in the school's debating, public speaking, and student council clubs.
BCS has 5 science labs, a computer lab with full multimedia facilities, a 22,000-volume library with CD-ROM capabilities, a 150-person theatre, an art studio, photography darkroom, and a student lounge complete with a recreational lounge.
BCS students have access to the new computer lab complete with 18 fully networked computers with Windows NT. Fibre optic cabling to all residences allows computer access after school hours. The library is equipped with complete CD-ROM facilities.
Bishop's College School embraces internationalism as a long-standing member of the Round Square International Organization. This organization encourages outdoor adventure, community service and responsibility for the environment, and the principles of democracy. BCS is one of the Round Square's 40 independent school members across five continents that offer student exchanges, service projects, and chances to work abroad.
Students and parents are encouraged to visit the Campus. Appointments for visits can be made through the Admissions Office.
BCS prides itself on its unique sense of family. Small school size means that almost everyone in the school knows one another. Teachers are not confined to the classroom, but play many roles such as coach, activity coordinator, residence attendant, and mentor. This way, the teacher and students see each other in different lights and develop strong, multi-faceted relationships.
As well, BCS has a spiritual base. Each weekday morning begins with chapel, during which the entire school comes together for a hymn, daily announcements, and readings from the New Testament, Hebrew Bible, Qur'an, Bhagavad-Gita, and other sacred writings.
At BCS, we prepare our students for the university education they will receive after graduation and to be leaders and valued contributors in the many difference communities they will touch as they move on through the world.
BCS is extremely proud of its placement of graduating students at some of the finest universities in the world. Canada: Acadia, King's College, McGill, McMaster, Ottawa, Queen's University, Toronto, UBC, Waterloo, and Western. United States: Boston University, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, and Yale. Students have also been accepted at universities in England, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Sweden, and Brazil.
